I’ve been slowly dipping my toes into the world of smart home technology, and I’m honestly having a lot of fun with it, but I’m starting to realize that some of the things I want to do might be beyond my comfort zone when it comes to DIY. I’ve already installed smart bulbs in a few rooms and a smart thermostat that I managed to figure out on my own, but now I’m looking at smart switches, dimmers, and even some outdoor lighting that I want to control from my phone. The problem is, I’m not sure how far I can push this before I need to bring in a professional. I watched a few YouTube videos about installing smart switches and it seems straightforward enough, but then I started reading the comments and people were warning about neutral wires and load capacities and all kinds of technical stuff that went right over my head. I really don’t want to mess something up and cause a short or worse, start an electrical fire, just because I was too stubborn to ask for help. I’ve also been thinking about adding some recessed lighting in the living room and maybe upgrading my outdoor outlets to include USB ports, both of which seem like jobs that should probably be left to someone who actually knows what they’re doing. I think I need to find a professional who can handle these upgrades safely and make sure everything is up to code, especially since my house is older and I’m not sure the wiring is designed for all this modern tech. I’ve been looking for accredited electricians serving Menlo Park homes so I can be confident that whoever I hire is properly qualified and insured. Has anyone else here gone through the process of adding smart home features and found that they needed professional help? Which projects did you tackle yourself and which ones did you leave to the experts? I’m trying to figure out where to draw the line between DIY and hiring a pro.
